For smaller municipalities, our operational reviews start with an assessment of your infrastructure, systems, and accounting procedures. We can examine your financial records and determine what opportunities exist for improvement.

We can then dig deeper using data mining and predictive strategies to analyze public and private records to develop a profile of companies and individuals who may be a risk for non-compliance. We use that profile to identify potential businesses and individuals in your town, county, or state for additional review. We have been particularly effective identifying unlicensed and non-filing/under-filing businesses and bringing them into compliance.

After we’ve completed a basic operational review of your accounting practices, we can help you become more efficient, gain a better understanding of your challenges with our Forensic Accounting services, and/or review and recommend updates to your municipal regulations and codes.

Recent projects have included conversion to QuickBooks from systems ranging from outdated or incomplete paper ledgers to the occasional outdated filing cabinets.

MRA’s forensic accountants collect, prepare, and analyze data and create reports that enables us to find inconsistencies or efforts to avoid payment of their taxes or licensing fees.

For example, we have used this process to find inconsistencies in the way individuals and companies account for different tax credits, and we can also set up a process to ensure that your employees are using their purchasing cards in an appropriate manner if you’re in a larger community with a lot of transactions.

Municipal regulations often aren’t consistent across different departments and have become overly complex over time as municipal governments put Band-Aids on problems as stop-gap measures. Our operational reviews also have found occasions where town officials aren’t fully aware of what these codes call for or how to enforce them, and where local governments have not kept up to date on the latest state and federal rules.
